ABOUT THE ARTIST
Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling create sculptural works in wood, ranging from half-ton monumental forms designed for secret gardens to delicately stitched vessels made from feather-light veneer. Collaborating full-time since 1997, they work together at every stage of the making process. Across all their pieces, the constant is the primacy of the hand - and of hand tools - with carving at the heart of their practice.
They develop several bodies of work concurrently, continuing their still-life groupings in both monochrome and colour while also producing major standalone pieces.
As long-standing members of Contemporary Applied Arts, they exhibit with the organisation regularly.
After living and working together in Stroud, Gloucestershire since 1997, they - along with their dachshund, Samuel - moved home two years ago “over the hill” to the city of Gloucester. Their studio, however, remains in Stroud, where they continue to create their work.
