ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mitch Pilkington is a Devon-based ceramic artist whose practice combines meditative processes, natural inspiration and sculptural poise. From an early age drawn to clay, Pilkington ultimately returned to making full-time after several years away, transforming a kitchen table studio into a national presence when accepted onto the Crafts Council Hothouse programme in 2019 - that year also saw them recognised as a “Rising Star” and featured in Ceramic Review magazine as one of its “One to Watch”.Pilkington’s beloved material is clay, both stoneware and porcelain, creating vessels and sculptural forms that drift between the familiar and the elemental. Inspired by shell-shapes found whilst beach-combing, and looking at the relationship between outer surface, tactile texture and raw material, Pilkington uses coiling, scraping, refining and firing, guiding each form through multiple stages whilst working on several pieces simultaneously to harness continuity of process.Pilkington graduated with an MA in Fine Art (Ceramics) from Bath School of Art & Design, and continues to work from a studio in North Devon. Mitch is a member of both the Craft Potters Association and Contemporary Applied Arts and is represented by a number of galleries. Each piece is deeply personal, evolving not from pre-designed forms but through the making itself - a reflective exploration of craft, form and the grounding power of material.
